Erastus Hathaway was born August 27, 1760 in Suffield, Litchfield (now Hartford) County, Connecticut, the son of Simeon and Deborah (Austin) Hathaway. In 1767, 1768 or 1769, he moved to Bennington, Bennington County, Vermont with his parents. On July 21, 1777, Erastus enlisted as a Private in Captain John Warner's Company of Green Mountain Rangers, and served until December 3, 1777, when he was mustered out. During the remainder of the time of the Revolutionary War he served at sundry times and at different places in cases of emergency and alarm. On June 15, 1778, he was drafted and served until July 10th in Captain Samuel Robinson's (Bennington) Company of the 2nd Regiment of Vermont Militia. The Company was headquartered at Rutland, Rutland County, Vermont under the immediate command of Lieutenant Colonel Ebenezer Walbridge and did duty scouting the enemy from the shores of Lake Champlain and Otter Creek. On October 12, 1780, he volunteered and served until November 6th in Captain William Dyre's (Bennington) Company. Dyre's Company marched to Fort Warren, at Castleton, Rutland County, Vermont. There the Company was engaged in guarding the stores, scouting on borders of Lake Champlain from Skenesborough to Crown Point, and protecting the inhabitants from the incursions of the British and Tories who were hovering about the Lake. In the fall of 1781, he volunteered and served in Captain Joseph Safford's (Bennington) Company. Safford's Company marched to Castleton where they performed duties similar to those of Captain Dyre's Company in 1780.
Erastus married Anna Warner, the niece of Captain John Warner being the daughter of John's brother Benjamin, on June 6, 1784 at Bennington. By 1786, Erastus and Anna were living in Cornwall, Addison County, Vermont. On January 29, 1787, he was one of the incorporators of the first Congregational Society in Cornwall. Erastus and Anna had ten children: Austin, Lovice, Rhodah, Erastus, Isaac Tichenor, Benjamin, Anthony, Rebekah, Harry and John.
Erastus moved to Swanton, Franklin County, Vermont in 1801. He resided in Swanton until his death on September 21, 1844.
