Casualty of the Great War,Douglas was a Second Lieutenant in the Royal Flying Corps.He was killed flying at St Omer, France in 1916 aged 19,and his body was repatriated and buried at Southend's Sutton Road Cemetery.He was Mentioned in Despatches.He appears to have been one of twins:

Two brothers also fell-one in the same war and the other in WWII.[Feb. 7, 1940]

Captain John Percival "Val" Tweedie-Smith . He was laid to rest in his brother's wargrave.


They were the sons of the Mayor of Southend-on-Sea, Essex, Robert Tweedie-Smith and his wife,Harriet Tweedie-Smith of Normanhurst, The Cliffs, Westcliff-on-Sea, Essex.

Douglas and Alan are commemorated on the brass plaque War Memorial formerly on the north wall of the redundant church at Mucking, Essex and now in St Margaret's church,Stanford-le-Hope.
