John Novak Jr., 93, died Sunday, Dec. 27, 2009, at Roper Rehabilitation Hospital, Charleston, S.C., after a short illness. He was born Sept. 6, 1916 in New Brunswick to John and Frances (Banfy) Novak Sr., and graduated from New Brunswick High School and the American Truck School. He was married to the former Mary Orosz of Keasbey for over 68 years. They lived all but the last four years in New Brunswick. John was retired after working 30 years with the Ford Motor Company. He was also the former owner of Novak's Beverage Distributing Company. He was a lifelong member of Ascension Lutheran Church in New Brunswick, where he served as a church council member and usher. He was a member of the Palestine Masonic Lodge #111 of Montgomery Township; Tall Cedars of Lebanon, So-Ra-Bo #46 of Somerville; the Scottish Rite of Central New Jersey; Order of Eastern Star, Ruth Chapter #12; a charter member of the North Brunswick AARP #3885; a member of the New Brunswick Senior Resource Center and Chaplain of the Leisure Club; a member of the U.A.W. #980 Ford Retirees; a member of the New Brunswick Democratic Club; and the Hungarian American Athletic Club.
He leaves his wife of 68 years, Mary Orosz Novak of Charleston, S.C.; a daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Rev. Dennis Butler of Laramie, Wyo.; a daughter and son-in-law, Janice and Frank Timko of Summerville, S.C.; four grandchildren, Matthew Butler of Priest Lake, Idaho, Amy Butler of Spokane, Washington, Bryan Timko of Newton, Mass., and Stacey Timko of Charleston, S.C.; three great-grandchildren, Emily and Luke Butler of Idaho, and John Timko of Mass. He is also survived by a sister and her husband, Irene and Ray Nakielny of Chambersburg, Pa.; a brother-in-law, William and his wife, Goldie Orosz of Columbus; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, John and Fanny Novak Sr.; two sisters, Mary Sabo and Goldie Kovach; and a brother, Joseph Novak.
Services will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 6 at Ascension Lutheran Church, 247 Somerset St., New Brunswick, with the Rev. Robert H. Wilson officiating. The family will receive visitors at the church prior to and immediately following the service. Inurnment will be at Van Liew Cemetery, Georges Road, North Brunswick following the service. Memorial contributions may be made to Ascension Lutheran Church.
