Harold "Pete" Popour, 87, of 644 Park Avenue, Manistique, Michigan died March 15, 2012 at his home under the loving care of his wife Donna, his nurse Jamie Paradise and his very good care-giver, Betty Wing.

He was born November 30, 1924 in Cooks, Michigan the son of Herbert and Claudia (Desjarden) Popour and attended school in Cooks.

Pete was one of 19 children. His parents were awarded the Key to the City of Detroit for having the largest family in the city at the time.

In 1941, Pete served in the C.C.C.'s at Camp Germfask. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army from 1945-1947.

On January 31, 1948 he married the former Kathryn "Betty" Tiglas in Manistique and they had two children, Sally and Paul. Betty preceded him in death on October 12, 1985.

On February 14, 1989 he married the former Donna M. Shampine in Manistique and they made their home in Manistique.

Pete was employed by the Operating Engineers on construction. In later years he was the bar manager at the V.F.W. Post in Manistique.

He was a loyal member and past commander of the Schoolcraft County V.F.W. Post #4420 of Manistique. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling, going to the casino, visiting, and going out for dinners with his special friends, David and Mary LaPratt. He always looked forward to going to the Heritage House to listen to music with family and friends, and also looked forward to having coffee with his buddies; Art, Ernie and Charlie. Pete liked to keep busy, even if it was just tinkering in his garage or sheds.

Pete is survived by his wife of 23 years, Donna M. Popour of Manistique; grandchildren, Melissa "Missy" Popour, Matthew (Erin) Popour, Sean (Barb) Lester, Marc Lester and Jon Lester; great grandchildren, Timothy Lester, Matthew Lester and Kallie Popour; brother, Wilbert "Willie" Popour of Taylor; sisters, Elmira "Girl" Popour of Taylor, Evelyn Mann of Rockford, IL, Arla Westlund of Escanaba, Alice "Honey" Pelon of Manistique and Mary "Tiner" Kennedy of Manistique.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his step-mother, Millie; his wife, Kathryn "Betty"; his daughter, Sally; his son, Paul; his brothers, Elmer "Mannie", Leonard "Bud", Frederick "Babe", Alvin "Lou", Eugene "Gene"; and his sisters, twins Bernice "Punky" & Beatrice "Swede", Eva, Lydia "Cheel", Leona "Kitty", Tresa and Frances.

A luncheon and time of visiting for family and friends will be held on Saturday, March 31, 2012 at the V.F.W. Post #4420 in Manistique beginning at 3:00 pm.

Burial with veteran honors will be held in the spring at the Inwood Township Cemetery in Cooks.
