Mary Fix was a pioneer in the historically male-dominated field of physics. She graduated Washburn University with a BA in chemistry, 1949. She worked as the only female research physicist at Sandia Labs in Alburquerque, NM, producing two patents. Much of what is known about her comes from a front page Albuquerque Tribune feature article that appeared Nov 22, 1957 titled "29 Men and a Girl."

Mary's legacy includes a new scholarship fund at Washburn's College of Arts and Natural Sciences. This legacy almost never happened. Mary suffered from dementia in her late years, and her caregiver, an Adult Protective Services agent, created a false will and forged checks. After Mary's death investigators discovered the fraud, plus found that Fix had established a trust naming Washburn University as beneficiary. Her legacy continues through the Mary N. Fix Memorial Scholarship.

Further details and photos are found on pages 10-11 of Washburn's 2016-2017 Directions brochure, found online at http://www.washburn.edu/academics/college-schools/arts-sciences/_files/directions/directions-2016-2017.pdf

Mary never married or had children, devoting her life to her research career and her hobbies, including photography and reading.
