Bryant Floyd (1925 - 2012)

Bryant Floyd, age 86 of Jackson, TN, died Monday, February 20, 2012 following a short illness.

The son of the late Mr. and Mrs. C. D. Floyd of Camden, TN, Bryant is survived by his wife, Dr. Mary Emma Steadman Floyd of Jackson and his brother, Charles Floyd of Detroit, MI.

Preceding Bryant in death were his brothers, James, Otis and Roy Floyd, and sister, Edna Dobson, all of Camden, TN.

Also surviving Bryant are his daughter, Melissa Floyd of Jackson and her partner, Stacey Patterson; and his son, Mark Floyd of Nashville and his wife, Anne Byrn Floyd, and his five grandchildren.

Bryant was an active member of the First United Methodist Church and, prior to that, of Forest Heights Methodist Church, both in Jackson. Bryant was a long time member of the Jackson Chamber of Commerce, where he was a Red Coats member and Golden Ambassador, and the Jackson Exchange Club, where he served as an officer, and from whom his service to the organization and to the Jackson community earned him Exchangite of the Year recognition.

Bryant received his Bachelor's from Lambuth College, where he later worked with Alumni and college relations, and Master's from Vanderbilt University in Nashville. In addition to his work with Lambuth College, Bryant, along with his wife, was the owner of the Alpine Christmas and Gift shop in Jackson for over 18 years.

A member of our "greatest generation," Bryant served our country in World War II as a member of the United States Naval Air Force. A caring man with a deep seated love for God, country, community, and family, Bryant personified the often spoken, but less demonstrated fundamental principles of humility, charity, servitude, which he "hammered and honed on the anvil of everyday living."

Visitation with the family will be held on Thursday, February 23rd from 12 p.m. until the funeral service at 1 p.m., all held at George A. Smith and Sons North Chapel, with Dr. Paul Clayton and Rev. David Hollis officiating. The committal service will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery in Selmer, TN at 3 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting contributions be made in his memory to the Downtown Dogs Group animal rescue mission at P.O. Box 3043, Jackson, TN 38303.
