Carroll, son of Martin & Jessie (Brown) McLane, used the spelling MacLane. He worked with his mother and uncle Dexter Goodman in the cigar business in Columbus, Ohio. During World War I he enlisted in the U.S. Navy at Cincinnati, Ohio, on December 26, 1917. He trained in Norfolk, Virginia, and served on the U.S.S. Kansas from April 3 to September 20, 1918, when he was hopsitalized. He returned to duty aboard the U.S.S. Kansas on November 11, and was discharged with disability May 20, 1919, having attained the rank of Seaman Second Class. After the war he and his mother farmed for a time in Berlin township, Delaware county, then moved back to Columbus. Carroll never married.
