'Everybody's friend
Jerry Carrico dies

"Satisfaction is the main thing.
They helped me a lot of years. I
just wanted to give a little back."

Jerry Carrico will be remembered as a "fighter" with a sparkling personality who raised thousands of dollars for charity.

Though afflicted with cerebral palsy, Carrico raised money for Mayfield's J.U. Kevil Center, May-field-Graves County Special Olympics, Western Kentucky Easter Seal Center and WPSD-TV Lion's Club Telethon of Stars.

Mr. Carrico, 38, died at 7:45 p.m. Saturday at the Bertrand Nursing Facility in Bertrand, Mo.

Described as a role model by friends and relatives, Mr. Carrico said he was only doing what came naturally -- and he always did it, with a mile-wide smile.

Mary Teckenbrock of Benton said she was happy her brother could come home and visit with friends and relatives on Christmas.

"That was all he wanted, was to come home for Christmas," she said. "He got the things he really wanted before he died."

Several family members were in Florida for the holidays, Teckenbrock said, but they were able to give their blessings to Carrico.

"When he was home it was so neat ... about 30 people talked to him on the phone. I feel like he got a few last wishes."

Bernard Toon of Fancy Farm said he's known Carrico since he was a small child. Carrico was someone most people would go out of their way to help and vice versa, he said.

Toon was among the friends who visited Mr. Carrico during his last trip home. "I felt real good about that ... talking to him on Christmas.

"He'll be missed wherever he's been in contact with people," Toon said. "You couldn't help but like Jerry."

Mr. Carrico and another sister, Nancy, crippled with polio since she was 3, moved from Fancy Farm more than a year ago after their mother died. Both siblings wanted to remain together, and the closest facilty that would accept them both was in Charleston, Mo.

They moved to Bertrand from Charleston Manor about four months ago. Mr. Carrico was on the waiting list for several nursing homes in McCracken and Graves counties. Despite the family's efforts, Mr. Carrico was never able to return to western Kentucky for good.

"The only thing that really hurt is that we didn't get him back to Kentucky," Teckenbrock said. "He seemed to like it over there, but he did want to be closer to home ... closer to all of his friends."

When Mr. Carrico lived in this tiny, tight-knit Graves County community years ago, he made dozens of close friends. When he moved away, he accumulated countless others.

Darlene Simbeck, a certified nurse's aide at Bertrand Nursing Facility, described Mr. Carrico as a "very sincere character.

"Jerry and I had become very good friends," Simbeck explained. "He would joke and cut up with me and tell me stories. He loved people, he loved everybody."
