Catharine Dirkje (Schoemaker) Eten
Catharine Dirkje Schoemaker Eten

Catharine Dirkje Schoemaker Eten died at the age of 103 on Feb 21, 2012, in Orleans, MA.

She was born on October 22, 1908 in Union, NJ, the oldest of 5 girls born to Dirkje Sangster Schoemaker and Daniel Schoemaker. She lived most of her life in Westwood, NJ with her husband of 63 years, Frank Xavier Eten. She was predeceased by her husband Frank and two sons, Frank Xavier Eten, Jr. and Louis Brauer Eten, three sisters, Louise, Adrianna, and Cornelia. She is survived by a daughter, Catharine Ann Brauer Eten of Wilmington, DE and son, John Louis Eten of Brewster, MA, her sister Johanna Marie Yelavich of Forked River, NJ, six grandchildren, Kristian Eten Kuhner, Christopher Michael Eten, Dawn Eten, Shane Anthony Eten, Danya Eten Norton, Brandon Michael Eten, great grandchildren, Madison Kuhner, Lila and Cameron Eten and nieces and nephews.

Catharine's parents were born in Holland. She identified with the landscape, symbols and customs of her parents homeland, learning the language and visiting relatives in Holland a number of times over the years.

In many respects, she was a woman ahead of her time. She had a strong work ethic, working most of her life, first as a registered nurse graduating 80 years ago from St Mary's. She then owned, and managed, the Westwood Pharmacy, Inc. with her husband and brother-in-law, Louis Brauer Eten. She volunteered for Red Cross blood drives and was an air raid warden during WWII.

In later years, she relocated to Orleans, MA with her husband. She remained active for 14 years after the loss of her husband. She loved nothing more than doing puzzles or doing word games with a dog on her lap. She continued to evolve over the 'senior' years in positive ways, in some respects, a late bloomer, independent as she passed the centennial mark. She never exercised a day in her life until her late 80s and 90s when she began a daily exercise regimen of walking that lasted approximately 10 years. Also, in her 90s, she would take the train by herself from Providence, RI to Wilmington, DE for the Christmas holidays. She continued to mellow in her 90s taking time for family and enjoying visits with her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, two favorite Westies, and children in the community.

Her legacy not only includes the generations she has left behind, but most notably, she is an icon of aging gracefully, independently, with both humor and attitude. She is missed.

Special thanks to the staff of Terraces for the loving care they provided. Catharine was laid to rest on Saturday, February 25, 2012 at Valleau Cemetery in Ridgewood, NJ.
