Norman A. Weakland, 78, of Grand Island left this life on March 15, 2012, to start a new journey home to be with his Lord and Savior. Surrounded by his wife and children, we peacefully said good-bye. Norm was born on June 3, 1933, to Alfred L. Weakland and Clara V. (Lempka) in Tecumseh.

Norm spent his childhood in Tecumseh. In April 1953, he entered the U.S Army at Ft. Sill, Okla. The service took him to Bad Kreuznach Germany, where he was a member of the 264th Artillery Battalion. In 1955, he returned to Nebraska, where he farmed with his father. He then worked in the Aurora area. On Jan. 5, 1957, he married Jeannette Vogel at St. Mary's Cathedral in Grand Island. They began their married life on a farm south of Dannebrog. They then moved to Alda in 1960, where he worked at Supersweet Feeds in Grand Island. In 1961, they moved to their present home northwest of Grand Island. Norm began working at Ford New Holland in 1967, and after 25 years he retired. He then, as a hobby, worked at the Wood River Golf Course until his health declined in 2002.

His wife of 55 years and his five children were the most important part of his life. Norm had a kind and gentle heart. Witnesses to this were his many, many friends. His heart grew even bigger when his grandchildren entered his life. He so loved to watch his grandkids play sports and was always willing to give rides on his garden tractor, or just spend time with them.

Norm was an avid hunter and could tell you stories of his hunts out west. He loved Husker football and NASCAR, along with watching westerns and military shows. He also spoke often, to anyone who would listen, about how Jeannette was the best cook around, and he loved her peach pie. He was a fine craftsman and perfectionist and it showed in the beautiful home he and his wife built for his family. Norm loved to travel, whether it was the camping/fishing trips to the lake, or visiting the Black Hills in South Dakota, especially Crazy Horse.

Those left to cherish his memory are: wife of 55 years, sons and daughters. Jim and Kaye Weakland of Grand Island, Jerry and Mia Weakland of Phillips, Julie and Steve Brooke of Benedict, John and Janet Weakland of Grimes Iowa, and Jennifer and Butch Evans of Grand Island, grandchildren, Rachel, Haley and Emily Weakland, Tyler, Kelby and Kelsey Weakland, Heather Brooke, Kyle and Collin Weakland, Chase, Jacob, Alyssa and Jessica Evans.

Those welcoming Norm into heaven include; infant granddaughter, Katie Mae Weakland, infant sister, parents, wife's parents, three brothers-in-law.
