Jennifer Lee Vernon, 38, died in her childhood home in the early morning of March, 15th, 2012. She had been receiving hospice care for several weeks due to a prolonged illness, and she passed away peacefully in her sleep.
Jennifer was born in Columbia, South Carolina, where she attended elementary, middle and high school. Not long after graduating from Wofford College in 1996, Jennifer moved to Washington, DC. There she would meet her husband, Steve, and on to touch many people as a model of kindness, courage, and graciousness. In Washington, her main professional focus was in the writing and editing industry. At various times, she worked for the National Geographic Society, the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, and the National Association of College and University Business Officers. Much more important than her career, though, was Jennifer's great enjoyment of reading, current events, the arts, travel, and the outdoors, particularly Pawleys Island. Jennifer was a beautiful wife, a deeply beloved daughter, sister, and friend, and an intellectually and spiritually brilliant person. She has moved on from us at an age far, far too young.
She is survived by her husband, Stephen Citarella of Washington, DC; her parents, Linda K. and Dr. Charles R. Vernon; her two siblings, Elizabeth Vernon Bell and Charles Vernon, Jr.; and a large number of extended relatives living in several states around the country.
A memorial service will be held at St. Michael and All Angels' Episcopal Church, 6408 Bridgewood Road, Columbia, South Carolina 2 o'clock, Monday, March 19th, with The Rev. Dr. Phillip Whitehead and The Rev. Dr. Susan Prinz officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in Sturtevant Hall. Jennifer's remains will be interred in a private ceremony in Greenhaven Preserve, a natural burial cemetery in Eastover, South Carolina, in harmony with her deep love of nature.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Jennifer Lee Vernon Memorial Fund, in care of the Pawleys Island Beautification Foundation, P. O. Box 2712, Pawleys Island, South Carolina, 29585.
