Laura Jane (Chalder) Neyens, 90, formerly of Alverno Senior Apartments, and 1605 Rhomberg Ave., died at 3 p.m. Wednesday, March 14, 2012, at Stonehill Franciscan Services, surrounded by her loving family.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 17, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 1700 Rhomberg Ave. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Hoffman-Schneider Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 1640 Main St., where there will be a prayer service at 6:30.

Laura Jane was born on Oct. 27, 1921. She earned her own money for school clothes, books and supplies by delivering papers, ironing, babysitting, correcting typing papers for the National Youth Association, and serving at teas. She was on the school drill team, took tap and toe dancing, and was a skilled sketch artist.

During World War II, Laura Jane worked as a cobbler and seamstress, making shoes for the Navy and hats for the Army.

She married Jerry Neyens on March 31, 1943; he preceded her in death on Oct. 21, 2001, after 56 years of marriage.

After marriage, Laura Jane remained at home to raise their children. She was a Cub Scout Den Mother and Brownie Troop Leader. A quiet but strong woman, her children were her life and she was their rock.

She was a member of Holy Trinity parish.

Surviving are her son, Steven K. (Leslie) Neyens, of Dubuque; three daughters, Becky L. (Glenn) Walters, of Titusville, Fla., Barbara M. Nyheim, of Dubuque, and Louise M. (Tim) Meyer, of Clear Lake, Iowa; nine grandchildren, Erika L. Nauman, of Brooklyn, N.Y., Dr. Nicole E. (Aaron) Mooney, of Rochester, N.Y., George T. (Abby) Nauman, of Dubuque, Audra J. (Aaron) Riddle, of Clarinda, Iowa, Alysia M. (Garreth) Webster, of Bondurant, Iowa, Christopher T. Nyheim and Nicholas O. (Candi) Nyheim, both of Marshalltown, Iowa, Rebecca J. (Ben) Leifker and T. Alex Nyheim, both of Dubuque; two stepgrandchildren, Rick L.(Jenni) Walters, of Peosta, Iowa, and Pam J. (Chris) Strub, of St. Augustine, Fla.; and currently six great-grandchildren, Owen, Mena, Clara, Laney Nauman, Matilda Webster and Liberty Leifker, plus a great-granddaughter (Webster) due in May.

She also was preceded in death by her father, Charles Clinton Chalder; her beloved mother and best friend, Ava Marie (Lowrey) Chalder; a brother, Edward Keith Chalder; and a grandson, Jeffrey M. Nyheim.
