Ila Matson Smith (1927–2011) passed away peacefully, in her sleep, Tuesday, November 15, 2011, at her home in Frisco, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Pittsburgh, PA, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Shields Matson and the late Ila Elizabeth McBurney. She is also preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Charles Edward Smith. A resident of Hatteras Island since 1978, she was a graduate of Carnegie Tech (now Carnegie Mellon) majoring in Art. Ila was a well known artist and many of her works can be found at local Art Galleries.
Mrs. Smith is survived by her daughters, Holly Smith West of Frisco and Shawn Matson Budd (husband, Tom) of Waterlily. Also surviving are her three grandchildren, Spring Weight (husband, Brian) of Pittsburgh, PA, Heather Gardner (husband, Krage) of Manteo, NC, and Ben Budd (wife, Suzy) of State College, PA. Also left to cherish her memory are her four great-grandchildren, Daniel, Chase, Taylor, and Ella; a sister, Ethel Campbell and nephew, Kevin Campbell, both of Scottsdale, AZ.
The family honored her request to be cremated. The family held an Open House for family and visitors on Sunday, November 27, 2011 at their residence, 51233 Lullaby Lane in Frisco. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Mrs. Ila Smith can be made to the Hatteras Island Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 639, Buxton, NC 27920.
