Vivian Catherine Devitt was born in Spokane, Washington on March 3, 1933 to Marie Frances O'Conner and Francis Joseph Hayes, two years behind her beloved big brother Bobby. She spent her preschool years in Fort Peck, Montana where her father, a train engineer, worked on the construction of the dam. The family moved to Bremerton, Washington around 1940 where her father built a home for the family in Navy Yard City.

After her father died suddenly in 1942, Vivian had quite a role model for a strong, independent woman as her mother went to work and supported their family. Vivian graduated from Bremerton High School and married Marlin Devitt in 1950. She was a full-time homemaker, with amazing skills at baking, canning, sewing, knitting, crocheting. Her three children were spaced out such that she was an active volunteer at Our Lady Star of the Sea grade school from 1957 to 1982, never saying no to chaperoning a class outing, preparing goodies for a bake sale, creating play costumes, or leading a scout troop. She was the bookkeeper for Marlin's service station and car repair business, was a regular volunteer for the blood bank, and was a volunteer bingo worker at the church hall for many years. She transitioned to paid employment, first working for the cash office in the Yard, and then she found her niche as a lunch lady in the Bremerton School District. She could memorize the lunch account numbers for hundreds of kids, and always had a few quarters in her pocket to slip to a child who was a little short on lunch money.

After retirement, Vivian stayed very active with friends, family, coffee/lunch groups, exercise class, you name it – she was game to try it, in spite of her health limitations.

Vivian died on March 7, 2012 just a few days after her 79th birthday. She did her best to stay active, involved, and full of laughter right up to the end as she struggled with emphysema and a total of 4 different kinds of cancer over the last ten years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, and husband Marlin. Those left to try to live up to her legacy of love and friendship include her 3 children and their spouses - Tim and Kellie Devitt, Randy and Leanne Devitt, Maria and Rich Brooks - as well as her four grandsons Aaron, Jesse, Conor, and Colin. Not to be forgotten, her 3 grandpups who could always count on a homemade doggie treat: Hazel, Scout, and Daisy.

Services to be held Friday, March 16, 2012 at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 5th and Veneta, in Bremerton. Rosary at 10:30 a.m., Mass at 11 a.m., with reception following in the Church basement. Burial at Miller-Woodlawn at 2 p.m. Remembrances may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, per Vivian's request.
