Raymond Charles Edward Smith, 89, passed away at Sentara Nursing Center in Barco on April 28, 2010. Born in St. Louis, MO he grew up in Pittsburgh, PA and lived more than half of his life on Hatteras Island.

He was a veteran of World War II, during which he served as a lieutenant in the Army Air Corp in Europe. He completed 52 missions while in the service. He was a graduate of Carnegie Tech, (now Carnegie Mellon), majoring in art. He was a prominent architectural designer in both Pittsburgh and the Outer Banks. Many of his paintings still serve as background for the habitat cases at Carnegie Museum in Pittsburgh.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Ila Matson Smith of Frisco; two daughters, Holly Smith-West of Frisco and Shawn M. Budd of Waterlily and a loving son-in-law, Tom Budd also of Waterlily; three grandchildren, Spring Weight and husband, Bryan of Pittsburgh, Heather Gardner and husband, Krage of Manteo, and Ben Budd of State College, PA; and four great-grandchildren, Daniel, Chase, Taylor and Ella.

In honoring his own request, a private memorial was held, after which his ashes were scattered near his home in Frisco. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum, Hatteras, NC.
