Elizabeth was the daughter of James and Mary (Whyte) Hays of Stirling, Stirlingshire, Scotland, United Kingdom. The family called her Bessie, which she did not like.

Several years after Elizabeth's birth, her mother passed during the birth of one of her siblings, leaving her father sole responsibility of the family. It was decided that Elizabeth would travel to America with her grandmother, Catherine Hays, and an aunt. James had remarried and decided to remain in Scotland. They traveled on the T.S.S. Transylvania (Anchor Line) from Glasgow and arrived on 18 Oct 1925 in the Port of New York. Elizabeth was all of six at the time.

Her first home in America was with her Aunt, Margaret Parker, who lived in Newark, New Jersey. She grew up in Belleville, Essex County, New Jersey, where she met and married her first husband, Frederick William Barmore. Together, they had four children. Alas, the marriage didn't last.

Around 1950, Elizabeth met Frank Simonton Howell while living in Ruskin, Hillsborough County, Florida. The couple later moved to Maryland. This union produced two children and lasted until their deaths only months apart.

NOTE: Elizabeth's death is recorded with the Social Security death records online as well as a memorial obituary which appeared in the Washington Post on April 27, 2014. Other sources include online U.S. Census documents, passenger lists, and family records. Names of the living have been purposefully omitted for obvious reasons.
