Henry Jackson Millard was born 1821 in Washington, DC, the tenth child of thirteen, the 6th male of 7 males. His parents were Joshua Millard and Ann Manning Millard, natives of St. Mary's County, MD.

He received his medical education and training at Georgetown University in Washington and then moved to Grand Coteau, St. Landry Parish, La. His brother, Dr. Edward M. Millard was already in Grand Coteau.

On 17 March 1849, Henry married Sarah Ann Haw. There were six children of this marriage. Burial records of four of them are known from the Rev. Hebert's records of St. Landry Parish.

He was mustered into service May, 1862 with the Confederacy and served in Gray's Legion. Shows in the roster dated at Choctaw Bluff, 28 Feb 1865, as "Apptd Surgeon". Died at Port Hudson, LA, but cause of death not stated, nor place of burial at Port Hudson.

The Port Hudson Cemetery could not confirm that Henry J. Millard was buried there. The Confederates were buried seperately from the Union soldiers and the Confederate cemetery is now on private grounds with no documentation as to who is buried there. It is possible that his family had his body brought back to Grand Coteau for burial - a distance of about 50 miles from Port Hudson, LA, but there is no record of this happening.

In November, 1865, the Succession #2780, of Millard, Henry J. is recorded in the Opelousas Courthouse according to Rev. Donald J. Hebert, V 7, pg 327. Found by Mardrie B. Dupuis, FAG contributor.
