Capt Elijah was the first child of Elijah Bingham and Theody Crane, born Nov 24, 1739 in Windham, CT. He lived first at Lyme, CT. About 1790 he removed to New London, CT, and kept the Union Coffee House.
In 1757 he served 15 days in Capt. Jonathan Rudd's 1st Co. (of Windham) of 5th Regiment. Drafted Aug 9-10, 1757, for relief of Fort William Henry.
In another record is credited with 15 days in Capt. John Fitch's Co. and is one of the men "who attended to the return of the pack horses."

1776 Capt 7th Co., 4th Battalion, Col Samuel Selden's Regiment, General Wadsworth's Brigade at N.Y. and Long Island, June to Dec 25, 1776. Prisoner Sept 15, 1776, but escaped.
1798-at New London, Nov 12, 1798, was filed inventory of the estate of Capt. Elijah Bingham. Silas, his brother was one of the administrators.
In Frances Manwaring Caulkins' History of New London published 1852, page 583, says "A short account of the yellow fever, as it appeared in New London in Aug., Sept. & Oct., 1798, with a list of those who died by the disease" was published in pamphlet form by Charles Holt of the "Bee" newspaper. From that account, which was compiled with care and accuracy, the following is taken:
"The first alarm was given by the death of Capt. Elijah Bingham, keeper of the union Coffee House, after an illness of two or three days. The funeral which was on the same day (Sunday) was attended by a concourse of people and celebrated with Masonic pomp. The heat of the weather was extreme." He married widow Mary (Banning) Brockway. She also died of yellow fever.
