Mr. Smith had only returned from University Hospital about a week ago, after about a month's stay, and at which place no hope was held out for his recovery. It was at his own request that he was brought to his home here, to spend his limited days. Doctors at the hospital diagnosed his ailment as lead cancer, and declared an operation impossible.
Mr. Smith was the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Smith, and was born in 1880, and was the next oldest of five children. He was married August 27, 1902 to Miss Esther Olix, of Astabula, Ohio at Jefferson, Ohio. To this union were born two children, the daughter, Viola, died in infancy and a son, Charles, 17, who resides with his mother. Mr. Smith was by occupation a painter and was an expert in his craft, many residences and business places in and near Pontiac bearing evidences of his handicraft. Mr. and Mrs. Smith had lived in this community for 18 years, and are well known.
Mr. Smith's remains are at the Sparks Funeral Home, Pontiac, and funeral services will be held from there at 2 p.m. today (Friday) with Rev. Duncan McGregor Ward, of Keego Harbor, officiating, and interment will be made in Oak Hill Cemetery.
Surviving, besides widow and son, are four sisters, Mrs. Myrtle Cmus [Camus], Royal Oak; Mrs. Herman Dondero, Grosse Pointe; Mrs. Julius Herring, Hamtramck; Mrs. Laura Thomas, Royal Oak, his father, John Smith, who resides in Greer Subdivision; and a stepbrother, Aloyus Burkell, of Detroit. The foregoing were all present at the funeral service.
