The son of John & Anna (Kauffman) Beidler and stepson and nephew of Mary (Kauffman) Beidler, in 1850, he lived in North Middleton Township, Cumberland County, although his exact whereabouts in 1860 remains a mystery. He married Sophia Zeigler November 1851 and fathered Elizabeth M. "Lizzie" (b. @1855 - married a Mickey).

A Civil War veteran, he mustered in Harrisburg (enlistment location not reported) October 31, 1862, as a 2nd lieutenant with Co. F, 17th Pennsylvania Cavalry (162nd Pa). He was promoted to 1st lieutenant May 25, 1863, but resigned his commission due to ill health on August 20, 1863.

After the war he became a prosperous merchant dealing in clothing. Sophia died in March 1877, and he married Anna Maria Matthew December 6, 1877, fathering Earl J. (b. 04/??/82).
