Born June 14, 1913, in Marble Hill, Ind., the daughter of James and Minnie (Shambough) Wells, she married Louis George on April 14, 1932, in Maple Park, and spent her life being what she loved doing most, a housewife.
Lavena was a member of St. Mary Parish in DeKalb for 72 years. She was an active member of the Altar & Rosary Society and the Catholic Daughters of America. She also was an avid gardener and expert seamstress. Her front porch swing was a gathering place for neighborhood children long after her own children were grown.
She is survived by her children, John George of Pleasant Hill, Calif., Robert E. George of Boca Raton, Fla., Grace Salazar of DeKalb and Jeannette George of Minneapolis, Minn.; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and -nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis, in 1986; a daughter, Evelyn; three sons, Jerome, David and William Eugene; five brothers; and four sisters.
The funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 19, at St. Mary Catholic Church, 321 Pine St., DeKalb, with Fr. Kenneth Anderson celebrating. Burial will follow at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery, DeKalb. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Sunday, March 18, at Anderson Funeral Home, DeKalb, with a Catholic Daughters service recited at 4 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Lavena W. George Memorial Fund for cystic fibrosis research, in care of Anderson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 605, 2011 S. Fourth St., DeKalb, IL 60115.
