Joshua was born in Indiana, the son of Jesse and Mary Essex. His family can be found living in Perrysville, Vermillion County, Indiana in 1850. Sometime before 1857, he removed to Boone Township in Porter County, Indiana where he married Rhoda Thatcher on January 1, 1857. He thereupon married Octavia June Smith on February 20, 1860, also in Porter County. After the death of Octavia, he married Sarah Marsh on May 4, 1862, in Porter County. No children living to adulthood have been found from his marriages. He had the occupations of both carpenter and farmer.
Joshua enlisted as a private in Company I, 5th Calvary on August 7, 1862. He mustered out as a full quartermaster sergeant on June 15, 1865.
