Andrew Ambler, a weaver, married Mary Johnson of Bucks County, Pennsylvania, on May 4, 1829. Three years later, he purchased a fulling mill and 82 acres of land in then rustic Wissahickon in Montgomery County. The couple raised a family and were successful in business. When Andrew died in 1850 Mary and one of their sons took over management of the mill.
