A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Bloomfield, Parry County, August 20, 1861, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 30 as a private with Co. D, 47th Pennsylvania Infantry. He re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer October 10, 1863, at Key West, Florida, and honorably discharged with his company December 25, 1865.
He married Sarah Catherine Miller June 11, 1867, in Benvenue, Dauphin County, and fathered Joseph M. (b. 04/21/68), Myrtle (b. 02/21/70), Libbie May (b. 02/12/71), Maud L. (b. 02/12/72), Anna B. (b. 05/31/74), Fannie B. (b. 10/27/75), Maggie H. (b. 07/04/82), and Ettie E. (b. 04/12/84) By 1870, he was living in Williamsport, Lycoming County, and lived in that area until his death from an "acute asthmatic attack followed by bronchoma."
