A Civil War veteran, he first enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg April 18, 1861, as a private with Co. E, 1st Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 27, 1861. He also enlisted in Bloomfield, Perry County, August 20, 1861, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 31 as a corporal with Co. D, 47th Pennsylvania Infantry. He re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer October 10, 1863, at Key West, Florida, and honorably discharged with his company December 25, 1865, making his service among the longest in the war.
In 1870, he was living with his brother Leonard in Williamsport and apparently did so until the end of his life, never marrying.
