US Soccer Hall of Fame. Olympic Athlete. Original name: John Sousa-Benavides. He is probably best known for his role in the famous upset of England in the 1950 World Cup and played in all three games the United States team played in that World Cup. He was selected to the 1950 World Cup All Star team by the Brazilian newspaper "Mundo Esportivo", the first American so honored in any World Cup. In all, he made 14 appearances for the United States, scoring three goals, and was also chosen to play for the US Olympic teams in 1948 and 1952. He played for the Fall River Ponta Delgada club that won the US Open Cup in 1947 and the US Amateur Cup in 1946 through 1948. After transferring to the New York German Hungarians team in 1951, he won both the US Open Cup and the US Amateur Cup with them that same season. Interviews with teammates and opponents alike recognized his expert dribbling and ball holding skills. He was played by Nelson Vargas in the 2005 movie "The Game of Their Lives" (aka "Miracle Match") about the 1950 team. He also was a World War II veteran, serving in the US Navy aboard a supply ship in the South Pacific. He was inducted into the US Soccer Hall of Fame in 1976.
