John Cobb Cooper, Sr. was married twice. 1st to Mary (Coldwell) Cooper #86738204, then to Elizabeth Ann (Painter) Cooper #86738192. John was born Jan. 21,1861 in Athens, Georgia and died December 17, 1933 in Jacksonville, FL, as recorded in the Florida Bureau of Vital Statistics, File no. 18840. The dates of his birth and death are readable from the tombstone upon computer photo magnification. He was the son of Charles Philip Cooper (1830-1896) and Hesse Mildred Jackson (1833-1865) who were married in 1853 and resided in Jacksonville. In 1930 he was listed on the Federal Census as living in Jacksonville. Mr. Cooper was an accomplished attorney who practiced law first with his father, Charles Philip Cooper (1830-1896) then with his brother, Charles M. Cooper (1855-1926), and later partnered with his oldest son, John Cobb Cooper, Jr.(1887-1967). He was a director of the Atlantic National Bank and the Federal Reserve Bank of Jacksonville. After the death of his first wife, Mary Coldwell Cooper (Jan. 8, 1862-June 8, 1909) he married Elizabeth Ann Painter with whom he had no children. His second child with Mary Coldwell Cooper was Nancy Montgomery Cooper Osborne (May 27, 1892-May 3,1970) who was married to Henry Plant Osborne, Sr. (1888-1972), a prominent Jacksonville attorney. His son Merian Coldwell Cooper (1893-1973) was a World War 1 hero, World War 2 Colonel, world adventurer, Academy Award winning producer, creator/producer of the original King Kong movie and numerous other films. Although all of his children and grandchildren are deceased as of 2016, two current generations of John Cooper's descendants, (several of whom are named for him) are numerous, residing in Jacksonville and various locations in the U.S. and England. The manager of this page, Cynthia Osborne Talcott Shay, is a great-granddaughter of John Cobb Cooper.
