Nona Joan Downey, 75, of Las Vegas, passed away peacefully at home Wednesday, April 21, 2004. Joan, as she was known to friends and family, was born Oct. 31, 1928, in Defiance, Ohio. As a youth, Joan, the daughter of Winona and John Louis Boehm, was a member of Sigma Tau Beta and a student of accounting and economics at Whittenberg College and Bowling Green State University in Ohio. Joan retired in 1986, from her 18-year career as the finance director/city treasurer of the City of Temple City, Calif. and, together with her husband of 54 years, Hal Downey, U.S. Navy retired, moved first to Bellingham, Wash. before settling here in Las Vegas. Joan enjoyed many years on the golf course with her husband and friends. She was active in politics, as well as the Los Prados NINERS, the Womens' Club and the Navy League. She was an avid reader and also loved traveling with her husband to visit their daughters and grandchildren in California. In addition to her husband, Hal, Joan is survived by her daughters, Anne Sobbota and Lynn Clements; their husbands, Eugene and Mark, respectively; two grandsons, Kevin and Christopher Clements; and sisters, Joan Litel and Mary Stillwell. Joan was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by family and friends. Funeral services will be held for her at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 27, at Palm Mortuary, 7400 W. Cheyenne Ave., with a reception immediately following. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to provide for a tree and memorial plaque honoring Joan's life, which will be placed at the Los Prados Golf Course. Donations may be sent to the Los Prados Home Owners Association-Golf Course Memorial Fund, 5150 Lone Mountain Road, Las Vegas, NV 89130.
