Son of John Leary, Jr. and Catherine Catherine E. Murphy. John was born and raised in Concord, NH. He worked in several capacities: salesman, painter, clerk, and finally, for the railroad. John married Elizabeth Cecilia Gurley on September 22, 1891 in Concord, NH. They had six children together. Around 1918, John moved the family from Concord to Lowell, MA. Then, after the children had all (except Katherine) married off by the mid 1920's, He and Elizabeth moved to Gloucester City, NJ to live near their daughter, Elizabeth Leary Guy. On the evening of February 1, 1929, while John's wife was in New England visiting relatives, John came home from work with the railroad, lit the gas stove and propped his feet up to get warm. He fell asleep in a chair in front of the stove and at some point there was a problem with the gas lines in the city causing a city-wide gas shutoff. Once the gas was turned back on, John was asphyxiated as he slept.
