Nazi SS officer. Sentenced to life in prison in 1998 for his partcipation in the massacre of 335 Italian civilians in 1944. During World War II German soldiers rounded up and shot the civilians, among them 75 Jews, in retaliation for a bomb attack by Italian resistance fighters that killed 33 Germans. The Italian men and boys were corralled in the Ardeatine Caves outside of Rome and systematically executed with a gunshot to the head. Hass insisted at his trial that he had no choice but to follow orders.
