Retired Businessman Stricken After Visiting Friends
Frank J. Babcock, retired funeral director, and well known in fraternal circles in Olean, died suddenly, Sunday evening at six o'clock at his home, 210 North First Street.
Although in failing health for some time, Mr. Babcock's death was unexpected. He had been visiting friends in the afternoon and died shortly after his return home, after he had put his car into the garage.
Born in Middlesex, N.Y., February 19, 1869, Mr. Babcock had been a resident of this city for the last thirty-eight years. He became associated with C.P. Woodard, funeral director, in 1907 and, upon Mr. Woodard's retirement in 1913, conducted the business alone. He continued for six years and in 1919, because of ill health, sold his business to Harry F. Halwig.
Mr. Babcock was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, and was also affiliated with Olean Lodge No. 252, Free and Accepted Masons, Olean Chapter No. 150, Royal Arch Masons, St. John's Commandery, No. 24, and Olean Lodge No. 471, I.O.O.F. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Nellie Brickell Babcock.
Burial will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery.
