Her death certificate states she was born August 15, 1826, in County Cork, Ireland, but as was true of many Irish immigrants, the date might have been an estimate.

The 1900 United States Census of Breckinridge County indicates that she immigrated to the United States in 1841, but this again might have been an estimate. Her obituary, published in the Breckinridge News newspaper in 1914, stated that she married Andrew O'Connell on October 18, 1848, in New York City. Again, the date might have been an estimate.

Mary's two oldest children were born in Louisville, Kentucky, i.e., Hanora (O'Connell) Burke (b. 1849) and Mary Ann (O'Connell) Haffey (b. 1852).

The obituary of Mary's son, Andrew Jackson O'Connell, published in the Breckinridge News in 1944, states that although the family moved to Breckinridge County (i.e., ca. 1853), the family returned to New York City and remained there for the duration of the American Civil War (which ended in April, 1865). The obituary then states that Mary's two youngest children (i.e., John Thomas O'Connell and Andrew Jackson O'Connell) were born in New York but that the family returned to Breckinridge County after the war had concluded.

In her later years, Mary lived with her daughter, Rose (O'Connell) O'Riley, wife of William O'Riley, who lived in Cloverport.
