Funeral services for Annie Mae Sanford Bates, 97, of 218 Hickory Hill Road, Orangeburg, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, 2004 at St. George Baptist Church, Orangeburg with the Rev. Jimmy Hanf officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Jimmy Garrick, Donald Garrick, Tommy Garrick, Stuart Pettit, Jim Rumchak and Norvel P. Davis. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Golden Bells Sunday School Class. The casket will be placed in the church one hour before the service. Mrs. Bates died Thursday, Jan. 22 at Jolley Acres Health Care Center in Orangeburg. She was born May 9, 1906 in Orangeburg, the daughter of the late Owen Sanford and the late Mary Robinson Sanford. She was a member of St. George Baptist Church and the Golden Bells Sunday School Class. She was the widow of the late Glenn Bates after 71 years of marriage. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Hal Bates. Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. James (Alice) Garrick, Mrs. Mary Dell Gray, Mrs. Eugene (Margaret) Pettit, all of Orangeburg and Mrs. Ted (Ellen) Bizzell of Norway; one son and daughter-in-law, Halbert G. and Maxine Bates of Orangeburg; 10 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren. She is survived by many loving nieces and nephews. Friends may call at the residence of Eugene and Margaret Pettit, 218 Hickory Hill Road, Orangeburg. Memorials may be made to St. George Baptist Church Building Fund, 1438 Shillings Bridge Road, Orangeburg, SC 29115 or to a charity of one's choice.
