John Harrison Helms was the son of John Harrison Helms, Sr. and Lou Emma Tingler.
Known as "The Mountain Man," he was married to Rebecca Florence Treynor 03 September 1914, Craig County, Virginia. They were parents of: George Henry Tingler, Roanoke, Virginia; Benjamin Harrison Tingler, Eugene Frederick Tingler, John Junior Tingler, and Edward Ray Tingler all of Salem, Virginia; Mrs. Elsie Lee Newcomer, Atoona, PA; Mrs. Anna Marie St Clair, Bethesda, MD; Mrs. Helen May Snead, Mrs. Hazel Helma Morrison, both of Troutville, Virginia;
Mrs. Florence June Snead, Roanoke, Virginia.

He was a mountain man, trapper and hunter and knew the mountain where he lived on Sawmill Road, off Wildwood Road, like the back of his hand.He was very proud of his 36 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
