Freda Georgia Smoot, 92, St. Clair, died in Sullivan on Saturday, September 8, 2001.
She was born in Elmer on April 27, 1909, daughter of Charles B. Bailey and Effie Mae Bailey, nee Helton. On August
8, 1929, in Macon she was married to Orva Hunter Smoot and had three daughters.Mrs. Smoot is survived by two
daughters, Marilyn Milburn and husband Dale, St. Clair, and Marcille Vinyard and husband Thurman, Pleasant Hope;
six grandchildren, Michael Gould and wife Melissa, Parkville, Stephen Milburn and wife Deborah, Fayetteville, North
Carolina, Christine Taylor and husband John, Sullivan, John Milburn and wife Lisa, St. Clair, Jennifer Kierns and
husband James, St. Clair, and Maggie Sedighi and husband Homer, Chesterfield; 11 great-grandchildren; nieces;
nephews; great- and great-great-nieces and -nephews; cousins; other relatives and many friends.She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Effie Bailey; her husband, Orva Smoot; three brothers, her twin Freeman Bailey, and twins Denzil and Dennis Bailey; and by two sisters, Audrey Bailey and Verna Labar.Freda was a longtime member of First Baptist Church in St. Clair. In past years she had served the church as a Sunday school teacher. She was also a member of the Adah Shrine 25 of the White Shrine of Jerusalem of the Robertsville Temple.After completing her
education, she taught elementary school for about four years at the White Oak School in Ethel. In later years, she moved to St. Louis and was employed by Mavrakos Candy Company in St. Louis as a decorator, retiring after about 25 years of employment.She volunteered at various nursing homes and represented Meramec Nursing Center in the Miss Missouri Senior Pageant in 2000. She received the first runner-up in the pageant.Visitation was held after 4 p.m.Monday, September 10, at Russell Colonial Funeral Home in St. Clair. A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday,
September 11, at First Baptist Church in St. Clair with Rev. Dr. Phil Turner and Rev. Milo Haynes officiating.
Committal services were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, September 12, at Bunce Cemetery in Elmer. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church Nursery Fund or First Baptist Church, St. Clair.The Missourian September 19, 2001
