James was born in Holland Township, Grey County, Ontario. After the death of his mother, his father took him and two other siblings (John Stanley & Ruth Agnes) out west near Watrous, Saskatchewan to homestead. James enlisted in the 214th Battalion, CEF in March of 1916 (still only 16 years old) and was discharged in April of 1917 (at 17 years old). At some point he moved to Kenora, Ontario. His first wife was Lena Henderson and they had two children: John James and Ruth Marquita. His second wife was Agnes Bruno and they had two children: Joyce and Victor Russel Edward. James also had a daughter Dorothy who was adopted by his sister Maria.
