Michael Warner, 14, the oldest son of Mrs. and Mrs. Wallace E Warner Jr., 3118 Atwood Ave, was found in eight feet of water at the deep end of the pool about 40 minutes after the swim class was over.

George Maki, the principal at Marquette Middle School, which Warner attended for the past three years, called him "a tremendous boy, a very excellent student, an outstanding citizen all the way around".

"He was one of those model students that every principle likes to have around his building," Maki said.

Ray Blum, a teacher at Marquette who had Warner in mathematics class last year, said the youth was "really intelligent" and did more than what was required for class. He said Warner "was really athletic - he was big on basketball and football – and really responsible".

Warner's father is a parts department foreman with the Madison Metro Bus Company. In addition to his father Warner is survived by his mother, Elaine, three younger bothers – Ricky, 12; David, 11; and Steven, 9, and his grandfather, Mark Burris of Lake Delton.

The funeral will be held on Friday and burial will be at the Verona Cemetery.
