An Unfortunate Accident
Fred. Clark [sic], formerly a resident of this city, was shot at Mandan on Monday evening, and he died from the effects of the wound on Wednesday afternoon at the Sanitarium in this city. The shooting was an accident and occurred in a public hall in that city where a meeting was in progress to see what could be done to protect the city from the Indians during the recent scare in that region. The room was crowded and directly behind Mr. Clark [sic] was a man who had a 45-60 navy revolver in a belt strapped onto him, and in the crush the gun was displaced and fell onto the floor and was discharged, the ball striking the deceased below the shoulder blade and passed through his body diagonally coming out near the right breast. The wounded man was brought to the Brainerd sanitarium for medical treatment, but nothing could be done for him and he died on Wednesday afternoon. He was conscious up to Wednesday morning and rallied just before his death enough to take an affecting leave of his wife and children.
The deceased was well known in this city where he lived for some years and was in the employ of the Northern Pacific, many of his relatives living here, among whom are George and John Clark [sic], brothers. A wife and four small children are left to mourn his death. The funeral will take place this afternoon at 2:30 from the Baptist church. (Brainerd Dispatch, 21 November 1890, p. 4, c. 4) [Contributed by A. Nelson]
Frederick's wife died soon after, leaving the 4 daughters as orphans. In his "Bridges I Have Crossed" memoir, Robert Harshberger describes what happens to the children. Information below is supplemented by his son, Bruce, and contributor John Van Essen.
The two oldest daughters, Minnie and Elsie, were taken in by Fred's sister, Susanna Hills who raised them.
Minnie Clarke (b. 11 Nov 1883, Brainerd, Minnesota) married Bernard "Ben" Sell on 10 Jul 1915 in Manistee, Michigan. They had no children. She died there on 07 May 1932 and is buried in Mount Caramel Cemetery.

Dickey (according to Ethel's obituary). By 1940 she was married to Emil Strand. She died 17 Jan 1964 in Ramsey county, MN.
