Harmon "Herman" Dernehl/Dernell came from Germany to America on the bark "Attica" arriving in NY Nov. 24, 1854 and settled in Athens. He brought over is family members as he was able. According to the History of Green Co. NY, by Beers, he had been a Locksmith and maker of surgical instruments in Germany and began to make wagons and ice tools in Athens. He allededly made the best ice tongs in the world. See photo of a pair of his tongs.
No issue (children). Herman & louisa lived in a large house in Athens, New York called Villa Sonnenshine. His sister Dorothea Sophia Amelia "Emilie," pronounced "Amilie," Adelle (Dernehl) Lang lived with him in her later years. She was b.1841 - d. 1921).Son of Peter and Wilhelmina Dernell, born in Mechlenberg-Schwerin, Germany. He was survived by two sisters, Mrs. John Lang who resided with Mr. Dernell for serveral years and Mrs. Marie Muellich of Albany. His wife died several years prior.
