Louis Stephens was born to Edward Warren Stephens and Della Esther (Van Metre) Stephens as the 5th son of 9 children, 7 of who survived into adulthood. His siblings are Fred, Dan, Bill, Eric, Zelma and Velma. as of his passing, Eric, Zelma and Velma survive.

he served 4 years in World War II in the U. S. Navy attaining the rank of Aviation Machinist Mate II flying PBM seaplanes.

he was wed for 54 years to Audrey Jean Stephens. They made their home in Grandview, Missouri. Audrey was a Teacher for Grandview Schools, and he was a watchmaker from 1952 till retirement in 1985
