Caroline attended Vassar College, earned a B.A. from University of Toledo, and a M.A. from University of Wisconsin. She married Edward A. Menuez in 1934 (divorced in 1945); married J. Thomas Mahoney in 1957 (died 1981). She started her career as a journalist during World War II and continued as a freelance magazine writer until shortly before her death. Her first book, The Invisible Scar, was published in 1966. Her second book, Born Female (1968), established her as one of the "founding mothers" of the feminist movement. It was followed by The Crowding Syndrome (1972), Everything a Woman Needs to Know to Get Paid What She's Worth (1973, rev. 1982), The Case Against College (1975), Enterprising Women (1976), What Women Want (1979), The Two-Paycheck Marriage (1979), The Good Years (1983), Second Careers (1992), and Lives of Our Own (1995). She was chief writer for The Spirit of Houston (1978). She was a member of the American Society of Journalists and Authors and the American Sociology Association. She is survived by her daughter Carol Menuez Barach, her son, John T. Mahoney, two grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
