Death Claims Local Resident at Age 104
Sagnaw – A Tuscola County centenarian, with ties to the area's history, died Sunday, Nov. 10, 1965 at St. Luke's Hospital in Saginaw.
Mary Elizabeth "Bessie" Cole, a life-long thumb resident, died at the age of 104.
She was born March 30, 1881 in Bay City, the granddaughter of Captain Joseph Francois Marsac, advisor to Governor Lewis Cass. She moved with her family to the Watrousville-Fairgrove area in the late 1880s, and there she graduated from school. In 1904 she married Claude Cole, son of Byron Cole, one of Watrousville's early settlers and farmers. He preceded her in death in 1960. She was an accomplished musician. She moved to Frankenmuth Lutheran Home just after her 100th birthday,
She is survived by two sons, Neil Cole of Englewoord, FL and John Cole of Vassar; two daughters, Mrs. John (Maurine) Gornick of Grosse Pointe Woods and Mrs. Russell (Geraldine) Glaspie of Detroit; 15 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Three brothers, one sister, and one son, Clarence Cole (on October 12, 1985) preceded her in death.
Funeral services were he;d at Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Caro with the Rev. Donald J. Eppenbroek officiatinng. Burial was made in the Indanfields Township Cemetery in Caro.
Memorials may be made to the Sacred Heart Catholic Church Building Fund, the Watrousville-Caro Area Historical Society or to Catholic masses. Funeral arrangements were made by Collon Funeral Home of Caro.
