Marian E. Hoffert, 95, of Tiffin, died Saturday, March 10, 2012, at Mercy St. Vincent Regional Heart Center in Toledo.

She was born July 27, 1916, in Marietta, to the now-deceased William P. and Amelia (Schwendeman) Engle, and she was raised on a farm in Washington County.

She met her future husband when she was working as a bookkeeper in Columbus, while he was a veterinary student at The Ohio State University. She married Elwood J. Hoffert, Jan. 1, 1938, in Columbus. He died June 13, 2009.

Survivors include: two daughters, Carolyn M. (Paul) Nightingale of Cincinnati and Betty L. Zambrano of Gresham, Ore.; three sons, retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. Thomas M. (Joanne) Hoffert of Fremont, retired U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Richard L. (Helen) Hoffert of Shalimar, Fla., and William J. (Karen) Hoffert of Tiffin; seven grandchildren, Laura L. (Hoffert) Scrivner of Harrison, John T. Hoffert of Fremont, Steven L. Bower of Wyoming, Ohio, Karla (Hoffert) Short of Pataskala, Christopher M. Bower of Grosse Pointe, Mich., Andrew J. Zambrano of Japan and Amelia Warden of Portland, Ore.; 13 great-grandchildren, Ashley and Thailyr Scrivner of Harrison, Nicholas Aprile of Columbus, Kourtney and Haley Gwilliams and Margot and Seth Short of Pataskala, Allison and Eric Bower of Wyoming, Ohio, Alexander and Lucas Bower of Grosse Pointe, and A.J. and Cayden Zambrano of Japan.; four brothers, William P. Engle Jr. of Lowell, Charles and Bernard Engle, both of Vero Beach, Fla., and James Engle of Pataskala; two sisters, Martha Jane Williams of Vienna, Va., and Zita Izzo of Jackson Hole, Wyo.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Timothy Engle Hoffert, in 1984; two brothers Sylvan and Glen Engle; and three sisters, Sister Beatrice Engle, Jeanne Glover and Monica Hoffert (of Tiffin).

Marian was a resident of St. Francis Home, Tiffin. She had completed two years of business school in Columbus. She was a member of St. Ann's Parish in Fremont for 50 years before she and her husband retired to Tiffin. She enjoyed their farm in Seneca County and picking blackberries and hunting mushrooms; she was an avid reader, and enjoyed playing euchre and other games with her friends at St. Francis; and she was a fan of harness racing. Marian shared in the work of her husband's veterinary practice located in Sandusky County from the mid-1940s to the 1980s.

Visitation with the family will be 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, March 14, 2012, at Traunero Funeral Home and Crematory, 214 S. Monroe St., Tiffin, OH 44883 (419) 447-3113, and 12:30-1 p.m. Thursday, March 15, at St. Francis Home Chapel.

The funeral Mass will be 1 p.m. Thursday at St. Francis Home Chapel, officiated by the Rev. Frank Murd. Burial will take place immediately following in Rock Creek Cemetery
