George was the fourth of nine children made up of four girls and five boys, all of whom were born in Victoria. He married Susan Hunter White in 1900 then went off to the Boer War in the same year, and did not return. His wife never married again. She died in Kerang, which is where some of George's brothers lived and died too. Her mum Isabella nee Hunter died there too, in 1881 aged 48, born 1833 (grave not located).
