Steven Cadell Whitaker, 65, of Blacksburg, died Sunday, March 11, 2012 at his home cared for and surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Christiansburg, on October 9, 1946 to Charlie and Frances Whitaker.
Steve was preceded in death by his mother, Frances Fain Whitaker; grandparents, Sidney Whitaker, Raymond and Stella Fain as well as a daughter-in-law, Ana Diaz Whitaker.
Steve is survived by his wife of 46 years, Helen Underwood Whitaker; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Steven Cadell Whitaker Jr. (Scooter) and his wife, Kelli of Chester, James Emmett Whitaker (Jamie) of Blacksburg; his father, Charlie C. Whitaker of Blacksburg; his sister and brother-in-law, Debbie and Jim MacConnell of Point of Rocks, Md..; grandchildren, Alicia and Sidney Whitaker and Steven Whitaker, III; sister-in-law, Nedra Underwood and brother-in-law, Floyd Long, both of Blacksburg; four nieces from Maryland and many faithful friends at McCoy Community Christian Church. Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints." ~ Psalm 116:15
Steve lived and worked in the Blacksburg area his entire life and especially enjoyed the 28 years he spent officiating mostly high school football, basketball and baseball games throughout the region. Mostly, he valued the time spent with his officiating friends and the young athletes. He was an avid Virginia Tech fan and enjoyed gardening and yard work. Steve was also a charter member of Community Christian Church where he served as a deacon and pursued his gift and love of singing both as an individual and through musical groups.
The family will receive friends and family from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday evening, March 12, 2012 at McCoy Funeral Home, 150 Country Club Drive, SE, Blacksburg, Va. 24060. Funeral services will be conducted at Community Christian Church, 6030 Centennial Road, McCoy, Va. on Tuesday, March 13, 2012 at 11 a.m.
The family extends a special thank you to the staff of Carilion Hospice of Radford. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Blacksburg Rescue Squad, 200 Progress St., NW, Blacksburg, Va. 24060 or Community Christian Church, PO Box 387, McCoy, Va. 24111. McCoy Funeral Home is in charge of funeral arrangements.
