John was a son of Holman Freeman Sr. He served under Gen Elijah Clarke; was at the Siege of Augusta and Charleston, S.C.; fought under Picken, Sumpter, and Morgan in S.C. Was with Count D'Estaing at Savannah, Ga. After Savannah was siezed by the British, the Freeman Brothers joined the Va. Army. He was made Captain; later joined Gen. Greene and was at the Battle of ‘96.

He married Catherine Carlton ( dau. of Robert Carlton, a Revolutionary War soldier of Va. died Wilkes Co., Ga., and his wife Rebecca)in 1785.
