John J. Niederer was born August 4, 1856 in Switzerland, the son of John Thomas and Susanna (Nigg) Niederer. The family immigrated to the United States in 1866 arriving in New York when John was 10 years old.

John married Mary E. Maulbetch in 1878. Mary was born September 22, 1849, in Wurttemberg, Germany. She immigrated to the United States in 1867. John and Mary had the following known children:

1. Anna Niederer (1874-bef. 1924)
2. Marjore "Marge" (Niederer) McClay
3. John Thomas "Jack" Niederer (1879-1931)
4. Emma R. Niederer (1881-?)
5. Annie Niederer (1881-?)
6. Frank J. Niederer (1883-1911)
7. Edward Jacob Niederer (1885-?)
8. William R. Niederer (1887-1918)
9. Amy Katherine Niederer (1893-1955)

Of their 9 total children, only Marge, John Thomas, Edward Jacob and Amy Katherine were still living in 1924 when their mother, Mary died.

The 1910 U. S. Census lists John's occupation as a Machinist in the Steel Tool industry.

Mary died January 19, 1924. John died August 16, 1931, in Madison, Dane County, Wisconsin.
