Augustus Downey died at his home in Bushnell, Wednesday, aged 87 years, 11 months and 3 days, of complications due to advanced years.
He was born July 11, 1834 near Montreal, Canada. When he was six years old the family came by boat and team to the United States. The parents being of Mormon faith joined a settlement of Mormons in Missouri. He came to Bushnell in 1868 and for sixty-four years he has made this city his home. He was twice married. The first wife, Nancy Luddington, and two children were born to this union, one having passed away, the surviving being Mrs. Jeanette Stubbs of Lincoln, Nebraska. After the death of his first wife, in 1858, he was married to Miss Martha Lindsey and four children were born, but only one, William of York, Nebraska survives. Of his own family of nine, all died except two sisters.
Mr. Downey was a musician in the Regimental Band of the 55th Regiment Illinois volunteers of the Civil War. He represented his ward on the city council of this city for several terms.
Funeral services were held at this home this afternoon at 3:30.
