Social and political activist. Nakaoka was a samurai and a catalyst of the Meiji Restoration that helped transform Japan into a modern nation and world power. A native of Kitagawa village, he was the eldest son of the village leader. At the age of 24, he became a member of the Tosa Kinno-to Party. The next year, he met Takasugi Shinsaku, and his views became more militant. Along with Ryoma Sakamoto, he helped broker a key anti-shogunate alliance between rival factions in the southern part of Japan. In Kyoto, he organized and led the "Rikuentai," a 50 man mobile anti-shogunate force. He was murdered along with Sakamoto in Ohmiya Inn in Kyoto, while helping the latter celebrate his 33rd birthday. He was portrayed by reknowned actor Tatsuya Nakadai in the 1970 production, "The Meiji Restoration."
