Samuel B. Davenport was born in Newcastle, Westchester County, the son of William Doty and Phebe Marshall Davenport. He was born July 7, 1825.

The family moved to Knox in 1828. He was educated at the common schools in Quaker Street, and brought up to a farmer's life. He was a Republican in politics. He served the town of Knox as assessor eleven successive years. For many years he was a trustee of Grove Cemetery Association, proprietors of the Grove Cemetery at Quaker Street. He married Hannah Jane Powell, a Quaker. Mrs, Davenport died in 1874. In 1876 he married Mrs. Caroline M. W. Baker widow of Dr. Austin A. Baker of Howard, Steuben county, N.Y. By his first marriage he had children as follows: Isabel, born July 17, 1851, died April 8, 1860; Mary Marilla, born June 26, 1853, and married George Hallenbeck of Knowersville, June 21, 1882; Elisha H., born April 2, 1856, married Emily Baker upon the same date as that of his sister's marriage above mentioned, and had one son named Baker S., who was born Dec. 22, 1883.
